Generalized Anxiety Disorder
I worry about everything. I’ve always been a “worry wort”. It’s hard to enjoy family events because I’m worried about everything that could go wrong. I have these scenarios in my head of all the terrible things that could happen. I can’t relax. I don’t even enjoy parties because I’m thinking about what other people think of me if they’ll be enough food, will everyone have fun, or what if they don’t enjoy themselves. I can’t even sit down and have fun.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a common condition where people find it difficult to control their anxiety and worry. You may feel restless or on edge, be easily fatigued, have trouble concentrating, or feeling like your mind goes blank. You may feel irritable and have tense muscles. You may be experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or feeling restless or like they don’t feel refreshed in the morning.
The best treatment for generalized anxiety is therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a very effective treatment for anxiety. However, some people find that despite counseling, they are still struggling with generalized anxiety. There are medications available to treat anxiety that does not cause addictions, change the mood. The goal of medicine is to feel like yourself but to be able to relax and enjoy things without excessive worry. For some people, medications serve to make therapy more effective.
